My first experience with designing was in 2002. I got involved with an online gaming site
called "Hardwood Euchre" and I ran Euchre tournaments. We had the ability to decorate our tournament
pages to attract players. I wanted to be
able to make my own pages. I had a
friend who wanted to do her own pages as well.
We got together and began to search for tutorials for HTML. We found a site called "Web Tech U" They had tutorials for many areas of HTML,
including forms and frames. We both
enrolled and started a journey to learn HTML.
There were also tutorials for CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). I took all the possible tutorials, I wanted
to learn the language to make pages. My
first page was for my boyfriend at the time (now husband). I had written some poems for him and wanted
to share them with everyone. I also put together a page for my family. My nephews joined the army and we had
pictures taken as a family before they left. I have
created many pages for family and friends.
I am also still involved with Hardwood Euchre and continue to make pages
to share with other tournament directors.
In 2009, I was given a copy of JASC Paint Shop Pro and
wanted to learn to use it. I again
searched for tutorials and found a yahoo group that was an educational group
and I joined. I wanted to make my own
graphics for my pages. I finished the
tutorials this group had, including HTML, and have enjoyed using this program.
I decided I wanted to make designing my career and enrolled
in an online program with Westwood College.
I quickly learned that online schooling is not for me. I am a better learner in a classroom situation.
While attending Westwood College, I began to learn Adobe products. I learned but continued to use Paint Shop
Pro. I gave up using or trying to
further learn Adobe products. In 2007, I
enrolled in Ashworth College and completed their Web Design Program. I worked as a caregiver full time and
designed in my free time.
In 2010, I married a Canadian and filed papers to move to
Canada. My husband owns his own computer
company and we had talked about adding Web Design to the list of services we
provide. I wanted to learn all I could
so I was able to do this for our clients.
I moved to Canada in December, 2013 and had no luck finding a job. I was looking through a free employment
newspaper and found an ad for an agency that helps people go to school to get a
career or change careers. I contacted
them and set up a meeting. I then
visited Canadian Business College, where I decided to attend. I am just beginning my journey and am looking
forward to the end result. I am enjoying
my program. My long-term goal is to
start my own business and share my creativity with my clients. I want to use the skills I am learning and my
creativity to help businesses get their information to their customers.
